The sanctions against the Russian-based Elecon joint stock company and the Nilco Group, as well as two organizations from China, were imposed due to the fact that, in Washington's opinion, they were providing "assistance to the Iranian missile program." This statement was made on Friday by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.
On Tuesday, the US State Department issued a notice on the imposition of sanctions against two Chinese and three Russian companies - in addition to Elecon and Nilco Group, Aviazapchast was also included in the sanctions list.
As indicated in the notification, all these legal entities fell under the sanctions of the American administration due to the fact that, according to Washington, they violate the US national legislation on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) with respect to Iran, North Korea and Syria. What exactly are the claims made against these organizations, the US authorities did not specify.
According to Pompeo's statement released on Friday, restrictive measures against two Chinese companies and the Russian Elecon and Nilco Group were imposed "for the transfer of strategically important technologies and names [products] to the Iranian missile program."
He also stressed that the US “will continue to work to thwart Iran’s missile development efforts, and [will] use its sanctioning powers to draw attention to foreign suppliers, such as those organizations in the PRC and Russia that supply Iran with related technology and accessories with rockets ”.
"The imposition of sanctions against these foreign companies is in line with our efforts to use all available means to prevent Iran from developing its missile capabilities," Pompeo concluded.
He did not give details on the reasons for the imposition of sanctions against Aviazapchast.
As noted in the aforementioned notice of the State Department, the decision to apply restrictive measures entered into force on November 6. The restrictions are valid for two years, but can be reduced or terminated by the decision of the US Secretary of State. We are talking about attempts by the United States to apply its internal legislation extraterritorially, which the Russian Federation has repeatedly rejected.
The sanctions envisage a ban on the purchase by any US ministries and departments of products and services of the blacklisted organization, the sale by Washington of weapons and military equipment, the issuance of American licenses to it to purchase goods subject to the export control regime, and the provision of assistance to it.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday at a briefing that the new US sanctions are due to opportunistic motives.
