Lukashenko called US elections "a mockery of democracy"

The presidential elections in the United States, during which a number of problems arose in the voting procedure and the counting of votes, constituted a mockery of democracy. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said this to journalists after visiting the Belarusian NPP, BelTA informs.

“Look at what's going on with this election [in the US].
This is a disgrace, a mockery of this democracy, ”he said.

Lukashenko believes that Western countries will be "afraid" to demand from the US to hold new elections, as they did in relation to Belarus.

In the United States on November 3, presidential elections were held, the results have not yet been determined. To win, you need to get 270 electoral votes. Democratic candidate Joe Biden said he expects to receive more than 300 electoral votes .

The incumbent president, Republican candidate Donald Trump and his staff said that the vote count was flawed and demanded a recount in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Trump's team argued that Democrats were hiding the ballot handling procedure from GOP observers.

Courts in Georgia and Michigan dismissed the claims, and in Pennsylvania, the court ordered to remove from the total number of ballots that came to polling stations after they closed and count them separately.

The US Supreme Court also upheld the request of the Pennsylvania Republican Party and ordered the state to isolate ballots that arrived after election day.

Trump's headquarters are also planning to push for a reconsideration of the vote in Wisconsin, where they claim there were also "anomalies" during the count.

In Belarus on August 9, presidential elections were also held. According to the country's Central Election Commission, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko won the elections with over 80% of the vote. His main rival from the opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya gained just over 10%. The opposition did not recognize the voting results and demanded that the results be annulled and repeated elections be held.

Since then, mass protests have continued in the country . Demonstrators who disagree with the results of the August 9 elections are demanding Lukashenka's resignation, the release of political prisoners and an end to violence against participants in peaceful rallies. Western countries do not consider the current head of state to be a legitimate president, in Russia the election results were recognized.

The Belarusian president promised to hold new elections only after the constitutional reform, since the current Constitution, in his opinion, gives too many rights to the future president and it would be dangerous to pass it on to just anyone.

He later said that he would guarantee the holding of new elections in the country when the citizens made such a decision.

The EU countries introduced the first package of sanctions against Belarus on October 1. The list includes officials who, according to the West, are guilty of falsifying the results of the presidential election and violating human rights in the country. Later , restrictions were introduced against President Alexander Lukashenko himself and his son Viktor, who is the President's national security adviser.

In response, Belarus has banned a number of European officials from entering the country. Russia has joined the sanctions of Belarus against the EU.
