The FSB officers detained the consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg for obtaining classified information from the databases of law enforcement agencies and the FSB. This was reported by the Public Relations Center (DSP) of the FSB.
The operation to detain the diplomat took place in St. Petersburg on April 16. The consul was detained red-handed when he met with a Russian citizen, trying to obtain information of a classified nature contained in the databases of law enforcement agencies and the FSB.
It is clarified that we are talking about the Consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg Alexander Sosonyuk.
"This activity is incompatible with the status of a diplomatic worker and has a clear hostile nature towards Russia," the message says.
The FSB reported that measures will be taken against the diplomat in accordance with international law.
In the fall of 2016, the FSB detained a Ukrainian, Roman Sushchenko, who, according to the intelligence service, was collecting information about the activities of the Armed Forces and the National Guard. The Ukrainian authorities denied his involvement in intelligence. The FSB claimed that Sushchenko was a regular employee of the main intelligence directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, but this information was denied there.
The Ukrainian agency Ukrinform reported that Sushchenko has been his own correspondent in France since 2002. The newspaper noted that the journalist was on vacation at the time of his arrest and arrived in Moscow on personal matters. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Sushchenko did not apply to the ministry to obtain journalistic accreditation.
In June 2018, the Moscow City Court found Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 12 years in a strict regime colony. In September 2019, Sushchenko returned to Ukraine. He was included in the list of prisoners exchanged between Russia and Ukraine.
