US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of "misunderstanding the facts" about Washington's actions in the Mediterranean, as well as the fact that the American side is delaying the appointment of a new UN secretary general's special envoy for Libya.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the Mediterranean Dialogue, accused the United States of playing political games in the Mediterranean and delaying the appointment of the Secretary General's special envoy to Libya. It is regrettable and counterproductive that Mr. Lavrov again misunderstands the facts and tries to rewrite history, ”Pompeo said in a statement released by the State Department.
Earlier, Lavrov, speaking about the problems in the south of the region, such as the terrorist threat, grave humanitarian situation, human rights violations and others, said that this is “a high, unacceptable price for the irresponsible geopolitical games of Washington and its European allies, who decided to test on the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa unipolar model of the world order ”.
In addition, he noted that the American colleagues have been delaying the decision on the special envoy in Libya for many months, ignoring the position of the African Union and trying to dictate their own terms, refuse to seek a compromise that suits everyone.
“The United States is actively working with allies and partners in the Eastern Mediterranean to promote greater stability, security and prosperity,” Pompeo said in this regard.
According to him, in Libya, the United States continues to pursue the goal of working out a political solution by the parties through the forum "Libyan Political Dialogue" through negotiations and with the assistance of the UN .
“We want an empowered UN mission that can accomplish this task. In this regard, the United States worked with our partners in the UN Security Council to strengthen the UN system and create the position of UN special envoy, as well as renew the 2020 mandate of the coordinator of the UN Support Mission to Libya, ”the Secretary of State said in a statement.
According to him, only Russia and China refrained from extending the mandate. He also accused Moscow of violating the UN arms embargo against Libya.
“Russia continues to threaten stability in the Mediterranean by using various methods of spreading misinformation, undermining national sovereignty, wreaking havoc, conflict and disunity in countries in the region,” Pompeo continued.
