Danish authorities decide to destroy all minks to fight COVID-19

The Danish authorities have decided to destroy all minks that may be carriers of the mutated coronavirus and transmit it to humans, Prime Minister of the Kingdom Mette Frederiksen said.

The words of the head of government were reported by the local media.
According to the TVS portal, now the mutated virus has been identified in 12 people. Its peculiarity lies in the weakening of the ability to form antibodies, and this can lead to a problem when using the COVID-19 vaccine.

Thus, animals that have a mutated virus can become a threat in the fight against the spread of a new infection.

“All minks in Denmark must be destroyed. You lose your life's work, passed down from generation to generation. This is a black day for me and for everyone in this industry. The government understands this, ”said Frederiksen.

The prime minister added that coronavirus infection was found on 207 farms, 67 have already lost their animals, in 23 the situation is uncertain. The authorities tried to find another solution to the problem, but the risk of the mutated infection spreading is too high, Frederiksen complained. The Danish authorities are confident that the new mutation can spread not only in Denmark, but also in other states.

The military and the Danish Emergency Management Agency will assist farmers in killing minks.

“We in Denmark are aware of our responsibility to the people of the country. But in the face of the mutation of the virus, we also understand what responsibility we bear before the rest of the world, ”concluded the head of government.
