The Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea on Thursday decided to uphold the sentence of former President Park Geun-hye, according to which she must spend 20 years in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of power. KBS TV and Radio Company reported about it.
In total, the ex-president will have to spend 22 years in prison, including two years for illegally interfering in the 2016 parliamentary elections, when she provided assistance to candidates from the then ruling Senuri party.
Park Geun Hye was impeached in March 2017. In July 2018, the first instance court sentenced the former president to 15 years in prison for bribery and another five years for abuse of power. She was also fined 18 billion won ($ 16 million).
The appellate court then extended the prison sentence to 30 years. Subsequently, the verdict was revised several times, removing some of the charges against the ex-president . The Supreme Court has put an end to the Pak Geun-hye case, as its decision is final and not subject to further appeal.
At the same time, the chairman of the country's ruling Democratic Party "Toburo" Lee Nak Yong said last week that he intends to ask President Moon Jae In to pardon Park Geun-hye and her predecessor Lee Myung-bak, who is also serving a 17-year sentence on corruption charges. Lee Nak Young stressed that pardoning the former heads of state would promote national unity.
At the same time, opinion polls show that the majority of the country's citizens are against this idea.
